Ukulele vs Guitar: Every Difference, And Which To Learn

A ukulele differs from a guitar in five ways that matter: it is 35% to 50% smaller, it has four strings instead of six, those strings are soft nylon instead of steel, it is tuned G-C-E-A instead of E-A-D-G-B-E and a good one costs about half the price. 1. Size

A ukulele is roughly 35% to 50% smaller than a guitar, which is the difference you notice before you play a note. That size gap drives the volume, the tone and how comfortable the instrument is to hold. 2. Number of strings

Most guitars have six strings. Most ukuleles have four. That is the difference doing the most work, because two fewer strings means less to think about and a whole family of one and two-finger chords that simply do not exist on a guitar. Those easy shapes are the fast track into stringed instruments: you can be playing a real song on day one.

Both instruments come in other configurations, like 12-string guitars and 8-string ukuleles, but the standard six and four cover almost everything you will meet. 3. String types and tension

Ukuleles use soft nylon strings. Guitars use high-tension steel. That one swap explains why the uke feels gentler under your fingers and why it sounds warmer.

Guitar strings sit at roughly three times the tension of ukulele strings. High tension gives you volume and brightness at the cost of tired fingers, low tension gives you comfort at the cost of projection. 4. Tuning and how the two are related

A ukulele is tuned G-C-E-A and a guitar is tuned E-A-D-G-B-E. They look unrelated written down, but they are closer than they seem. Put a capo across the four highest strings of a guitar at the 5th fret and you get the notes of a ukulele. A ukulele is essentially the top four guitar strings tuned up a fourth. Do guitar chords work on a ukulele?

Many guitar chord shapes do transfer to a ukulele, because the uke is tuned like the top four guitar strings raised a fourth. Play a guitar D shape on a ukulele and you get a G chord. For guitar chords that use the low E or A strings, you can usually keep the shape and simply drop the bottom two.

The catch is that dropping those two strings sometimes removes notes the chord needs, so a shape carried straight over can sound thin or plain wrong. When in doubt, look the shape up properly in the chord diagrams tool rather than guessing.

5. Sound

Guitars are louder and brighter with far more bass. Ukuleles are quieter and sweeter with the emphasis up top, a tone people describe as gentle or harp-like. The guitar gets its voice from a bigger body, a wider pitch range and high-tension steel strings that are often played with a pick. The ukulele gets its own from a small body, soft strings and low tension.

Tonewood, body size and build all pull at this, so treat those as tendencies rather than rules. A nylon-string classical guitar, for what it is worth, sits somewhere between the two.

6. Scale length

Scale length is the vibrating part of the string, from the nut to the saddle. A ukulele’s scale is 25% to 50% shorter than a guitar’s, so the frets sit closer together and you stretch less to make a shape. That is exactly why the uke suits children, smaller hands and anyone who wants a comfortable instrument. Shorter scales carry lower tension too, so you get both benefits at once.

7. Price

A good beginner ukulele costs around $100. A decent beginner guitar starts closer to $200, and guitars at that price often need setup work before they play comfortably. 8. The baritone ukulele, the closest thing to both

A baritone ukulele is tuned D-G-B-E, exactly like the top four strings of a guitar, which makes it the one uke where your guitar shapes transfer directly. It is also the largest of the four sizes at around 30 inches (76 cm). Think of it as a guitar without its two lowest strings, with the same warning as before about the missing bass notes. What about a guitalele?

A guitalele is a six-string instrument built at roughly tenor-ukulele size and tuned a fourth above a guitar, so A-D-G-C-E-A. You keep all six strings and every guitar shape you already know, in a body small enough to throw in a bag. If you want ukulele portability without giving up the guitar neck you know, that is the compromise.

9. Is a ukulele easier than a guitar?

Yes, the ukulele is easier than the guitar, by a distance. I love both instruments and this is not a question of which is better, only which is easier to start on. Let me score it.

Final score: 6-0 to the ukulele. On the kid-sized round, child-size guitars do exist, but the cheap ones are usually rough. You have to reach something like a Baby Taylor or a Little Martin before they are genuinely good, by which point you are well past the price of an excellent ukulele.

The uke has fewer roadblocks between you and your first song. In my experience complete beginners progress faster on it and enjoy it more, which is really the whole game: the instrument you keep picking up is the one you get good at.

When the guitar is the better choice

A 6-0 scoreline on easier is not the same as the ukulele being the right instrument for you. Pick the guitar if you want real bass and volume, if you want the wider chord voicings and range that six strings give you or if the music you actually want to play is built around guitar technique like lead lines and fingerstyle bass. A guitar also projects better if you plan to play with other people in big rooms.

And if your heart is simply set on the guitar, learn the guitar. The hill is a little steeper at the start, that is all. Nothing you learn is wasted either way, because fretboard awareness, strumming, rhythm and ear training all carry across whichever you begin with.
