For strumming I find that is sounds nice if you play two down strums on each chord, then when the song goes “it’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to” and “I’ll cry until my pity partys in flames” I do two down strums on the first chord and a single down strum on the second one.

I only use DDDDU for the bridge 🙂
Just a tip. If you’re struggling with D, use your thumb and bar the chord instead. It’s easier for me, but some people might find it harder.
