F
a winter's day
     Bb               F
In a deep and dark December;

Gm C  Bb F
I  am alone,
Gm             C      Gm                C
Gazing from my window to the streets below
     Gm             Bb                C
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.

       F
I am a rock,
        C  F
I am an is-land.

           F
I've built walls,
  Bb                 F
a fortress deep and mighty,
     Gm   C   Bb   F
That none may penetrate.
  Gm              C           Gm                C
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
      Gm               Bb           C
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.

       F
I am a rock,
        C  F
I am an is-land.

              F
Don't talk of love,
     Bb                 F
I've heard the words before;
     Gm   C         Bb   F
It's sleeping in my memory.
      Gm                C          Gm                 C
And I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
     Gm            Bb                C
If I never loved I never would have cried.

       F
I am a rock,
        C  F
I am an is-land.

          F
I have my books

       Bb            F
And my poetry to protect me;
     Gm   C         Bb   F
I am shielded in my armor,

Gm           C     Gm             C
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.

  Gm               Bb              C
I touch no one and no one touches me.

       F
I am a rock,
        C  F
I am an is-land.

      Bb     Am      F
And a rock  feels no pain;
       Bb      Am   F
And an island never cries.
