E
a winter's day
     A               E
In a deep and dark December;

Gbm B  A E
I  am alone,
Gbm             B      Gbm                B
Gazing from my window to the streets below
     Gbm             A                B
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.

       E
I am a rock,
        B  E
I am an is-land.

           E
I've built walls,
  A                 E
a fortress deep and mighty,
     Gbm   B   A   E
That none may penetrate.
  Gbm              B           Gbm                B
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
      Gbm               A           B
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.

       E
I am a rock,
        B  E
I am an is-land.

              E
Don't talk of love,
     A                 E
I've heard the words before;
     Gbm   B         A   E
It's sleeping in my memory.
      Gbm                B          Gbm                 B
And I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
     Gbm            A                B
If I never loved I never would have cried.

       E
I am a rock,
        B  E
I am an is-land.

          E
I have my books

       A            E
And my poetry to protect me;
     Gbm   B         A   E
I am shielded in my armor,

Gbm           B     Gbm             B
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.

  Gbm               A              B
I touch no one and no one touches me.

       E
I am a rock,
        B  E
I am an is-land.

      A     Abm      E
And a rock  feels no pain;
       A      Abm   E
And an island never cries.
