Intro: Eb

Verse 1:
   Eb
Dear God,
          Gm Ab
I’ve been trying awful hard to make You proud of me
       Eb
But it seems
    Gm Ab
The harder that I try, all the harder it becomes
                       Eb
And I feel like giving up
Gm Ab
Most of the time

Verse 2:
    Eb
Dear God,
          Gm Ab
I’ve been chasing their approval and it’s killing me
      Eb
And I know
    Gm
The more I try to prove
        Ab
All the less I have to show
                     Eb
And I’m stuck inside my head
Gm Ab
Most of the time

Pre-Chorus:
            Fm
But, If I pray a little harder
     Bb
If I follow all the rules
  Fm Bb
I wonder could I ever be enough

Chorus:
         Eb Gm
Cause I try and I try
        Ab Eb
Just to fall back down again
                 Gm
And I ask myself why
     Ab Eb
Do I try to chase the wind
         Cm Bb
I should lean into the mystery
      Ab Eb
Maybe hope is found in a melody
     Cm Bb Ab
So I wanna try again
      Cm Bb Ab
Oh, I’m gonna try again

Verse 3:
         Eb
And Dear child,
           Gm Ab
I hope you know how much I love you and I’m proud of you
             Eb
And please believe
    Gm Ab
The thoughts I have for you will never change or fade away
                               Eb
And when you felt like giving up
Gm Ab
I never did

Pre-Chorus:
               Fm
'Cause I’m not scared of imperfections
        Bb
Or the questions in your head
      Fm Bb
Just know that you have always been enough

Chorus:
           Eb Gm
'Cause you tried and tried
      Ab Eb
And I saw you wrestle with
                 Gm
Every how, every why...
       Ab Eb
I was right there listening
        Cm Bb
So just fall into the mystery
     Ab
I’ll meet you here in the melody
   Cm Bb Ab
try just to try again
   Cm Bb Ab
Oh child would you try again?
   Cm Bb Eb
My child you can love again

Hi, This is a Tom Petty song. Just a good note to have, John Mayer didn’t write it.

Meglongo

For everyone commenting that this is a tom petty song: this is the John Mayer version of the song. He sings it differently.

Lucy

So sad that Tom Petty died ??????

WarBro

Great song. What I like doing which makes it a little fancier sounding and also is a little easier to play is first I transpose to the key of C. Then, instead of F, I play Csus4 and instead of G I play Gsus4. My ring finger stays of the third fret of the A string the whole time and I use my index finger for Csus4 and my index and middle for Gsus4.

Lucy

My dad love loves this song!!?????

Narwhal

I find it easy to do G,C,Em,D if your a beginner

Lucy

Also I think it sounds a lot better when you play C7 instead of G?❤️??

mal

what does -5 mean

megalodon-1001

great strumming pattern: DDT-D-DTD

truk

I like it transposed to -3, and Dsus4 instead of G.

Biography

Cory Asbury began leading worship at his church in North Carolina at the age of 17. Even as a kid, music has always had a profound impact on him, “I’d find a CD that I really loved, that really moved my heart and just sit in my room, silent and still and just listen.” He was originally planning to attend UNC Chapel Hill when the Lord redirected his path. Through a few friends who had just graduated the onething internship in Kansas City, he was encouraged to go and check it out for himself.
