Intro:
   Dm7 Am7 C G
   Dm7 F G

Verse 1:
Dm7 Am7
When I was younger, I would argue with my dad
C G
Tell him that I hated him  when I was talking back
Dm7 F G
Blocked his number, can't believe that I did that
G
Oh, I didn't have a reason, wish that I could take it back
Dm7 Am7 C G
But as the years went by, he was always by my side
   Dm7 F G
To wipe all of the tears I cried

Chorus:
Dm7 Am7 C G
Now that I'm older, realize my father
    Dm7 F G
Was doing the best he could do
Dm7 Am7 C G
Told him, "One day, I'll have a son or a daughter
    Dm7 F G
And when I'm a father too
G
I hope that I am just like you"

Post-Chorus:
Dm7 Am7
I hope that I am just like you
C G Dm7
I hope that I am just like you
F G
I hope that I am just like you

Verse 2:
Dm7 Am7
Now I realize that he had struggles of his own
C G
How could I be so selfish, oh, how could I block his phone?
Dm7 F G
I remember when my father lost his job
G
He held our home together for the family, he was strong
Dm7 Am7 C G
But as the years went by, he was always by my side
   Dm7 F G
To wipe all of the tears I cried

Chorus:
Dm7 Am7 C G

Was doing the best he could do
Dm7 Am7 C G

And when I'm a father too
G
I hope that I am just like you"

Biography

After getting dropped by Columbia Records at 18 years old, singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin built a following by playing in parking lots outside of Shawn Mendes and Troye Sivan concerts. The Phoenix, Arizona native caught the attention of Jon Bellion, earning a songwriting credit on Bellion’s debut album and later joined him on tour.

To build on the momentum, Benjamin began uploading new songs to his YouTube channel at a rapid clip and eventually earned a viral hit with “I Built a Friend” and a deal with Atlantic Records.
