This policy covers the UkuTabs: Ukulele Songs app for iPhone. It is deliberately separate from the UkuTabs.com website Privacy Policy and from the Tuner app policy, because each works differently. This app has no ads, but it does have an optional account and basic crash and usage analytics, so it gets its own page that says exactly what it does.
1. Who I Am
UkuTabs is a free ukulele resource that I (Jonas) have run since March 2012. I built and publish this app. For any privacy question about it, contact me at [email protected].
2. You Don’t Need an Account
You can open the app, search the whole catalog, read any song with its chords and chord diagrams, and save up to five favorites without ever signing in. None of that requires an account, and none of it is tied to your name.
3. If You Do Sign In
Signing in is optional. It uses your existing UkuTabs.com account through a secure web login, so the app never sees or stores your password. When you are signed in, the app receives your account ID, your public display name, and whether you have a premium membership, and it can sync these things across your devices:
- your favorites
- your reading settings (chord color, text size, line spacing and the like)
- the key you transpose a song to
- your setlists, if and when that feature ships
This is stored on your UkuTabs.com account, the same account the website uses, and it is governed by the main UkuTabs.com privacy policy as well as this one. Signing in is the only reason the app would know who you are.
4. Deleting Your Account
You can delete your account from inside the app, under the Account tab. Deleting it permanently removes your UkuTabs account and the data attached to it, including your favorites and any comments you posted on ukutabs.com. It can’t be undone. You can also keep using the app for free afterward without an account.
5. Purchases
UkuTabs Plus is sold through Apple’s In-App Purchase. Apple handles the payment. The app never sees your card, and I never receive your payment details. Apple shares only whether a purchase or subscription is active, which is what unlocks the Plus features.
6. Crash Reports and Usage Analytics
The app uses Google Firebase for two things: crash reporting (so I can fix the things that break) and basic usage analytics (so I can see which features people actually use, like how many people open stage mode). This is configured WITHOUT any advertising identifier, so the app does not track you across other apps or websites and shows you no ads. The data Firebase collects is diagnostic and aggregate. It is not used to build an advertising profile of you, and it is not sold.
7. Songs You Save for Offline
When you save a song for offline reading, the song’s text and chords are stored on your device so you can read it without a connection. That copy stays on your device.
8. Watching a Song’s Video
Some songs offer a play-along video from YouTube. If you start one, it plays inside the app from YouTube, and at that point Google’s and YouTube’s own privacy terms apply to the video. The app itself does not track what you watch.
9. The Tuner and Your Microphone
The app includes a ukulele tuner. It uses your device microphone for one reason only: to hear your ukulele so it can show you the pitch of each string. The audio is processed live on your device while you tune. It is never recorded, never saved, and never sent anywhere. Nothing leaves your phone. iOS will ask your permission the first time you open the tuner, and you can change it any time in the iOS Settings app.
10. Children
The app does not knowingly collect personal data from children. The optional account and the analytics described above are the only data paths, and reading songs needs neither.
11. Changes to This Policy
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
