Note Chords posted are in the same key as the recording in 1969. Pick the first paragraph, and then the rest is strumming until the last 3 words. Optionally you can play a Dm instead of a Dsus2 in the first verse, but as suggested the Dsus2 sounds better!

Dsus2 C
   Hello darkness, my old friend,
                           Dsus2
I've come to talk with you again,
                     Bb F
Because a vision softly creeping,
                        Bb F
Left it's seeds while I was sleeping,
        Bb F
And the vision that was planted in my brain
        Dsus2
Still remains
           C Dm
Within the sound of silence.

                             C
In restless dreams I walked alone
                        Dm
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
                   Bb F
'neath the halo of a street lamp,
                          Bb F
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
        Bb F
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
               Dm
That split the night
                C Dm
And touched the sound of silence.

                         C
And in the naked light I saw
                           Dm
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
                   Bb F
People talking without speaking,
                   Bb F
People hearing without listening,
               Bb F
People writing songs that voices never share
           Dm
And no one dare
            C Dm
Disturb the sound of silence.

                         C
Fools said i, you do not know
                      Dm
Silence like a cancer grows.
                     Bb F
Hear my words that I might teach you,
                    Bb F
Take my arms that I might reach you.
       Bb F
But my words like silent raindrops fell,

And echoed
       C Dm
In the wells of silence

                         C
And the people bowed and prayed
                     Dm
To the neon God they made.
                         Bb F
And the sign flashed out it's warning,
                      Bb F
In the words that it was forming.
                       Bb
And the sign said, the words of the prophets

    Dm F
Are written on the subway walls
             F
And tenement halls.
                     C Dm
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.
                    / /

  1. I think +1 is the original song

  2. For the Anna Kendrick version from trolls, +4 is in the right key. When in +4, you can substitute Gbsus2 for Gbm for easier :)

  3. I am here for the memes.

  4. I changed the Asus2 to Am on -5 and it sounds fine

  5. Good picking method:
    –0—0—-
    —-0——
    0———-
———– try this whole playing Dsus2

  6. These chords are fantastic!! +5 is easiest for my voice range (alto).

  7. I believe the original key if you listen carefully is in D#m and you will have no respite playing it in the Uku. But, it is about the scale you are comfortable with.

The disturbed version is easier to play with F#m, E, D and A

  8. crazedpjofan

    I love this!

  9. -5 is probably easier for soprano

  10. cliftonlobo

Thanks guys! Love this website! :D

  11. Scarlet Benoit

I love this song and this web site!!!!!

  12. KIERA BAFFENIE OCTTIVIA LULU

this chord is cool, but is so hard.

  13. This line “And the vision that was planted in my brain,” goes off pitch when just the Bflat is used for this line. I use C7 for vision, Bflat for planted, and F for brain. This applies for all verses with that same line.

  14. Bobmanlolw

for beginners you can substitute Asus2 with Am and it still sounds good.

  15. capo on the 1st fret to match the recording I found on youtube

  16. This plays pretty well at +4. I have trouble singing it as originally written.

  17. If you listen to the song, the chord picked throughout the first verse (apart from the last one) is actually Dsus2, otherwise a very nice transcription.
