an easier alternate for d7 is holding down second fret first and third strings, it’s still d7 but in an easier lower octave!

This is how I play it. I apply the same chord changes to the rest of the song because it pretty much repeats.
As for the D7 vs D issue, I like to keep the D7 because when you play the D7 it pulls your ear to expect the next chord for relief. Could also just be preference.
