C C F a quark is a fundamental constituent of matter G F C Observed in 1968 through deep elastic scatter. C C F We found that protons aren't as simple as we thought. G F C We thought they were solid particles but they are not. C C F Protons in fact are made up of three separate pieces. G F C It just gets more confusing as our knowledge increases. C C F But that is what a quark is; It's a piece of a proton, G F C And they also make up other things including the neutron. C C F Oh, up, down, strange, charm, top, bottom G F C If you don't know what a quark is, it don't matter you still got 'em. C C F And with leptons and bosons, unless something's amiss, G F C They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists. C C F Things made up of quarks including protons and neutrons G F C Are composite particles that physicists call hadrons. C C F Many types of hadrons are theoretically described, G F C But most exist for only very brief amounts of time. C C F Quarks have electric charge, color charge, mass and spin, G F C And having color charge means they exist solely inside of C C F Other kinds of particles and cannot exist alone. G F C Which is why quarks have never been studied on their own. C C F Up, down, strange, charm, top, bottom G F C If you don't know what a quark is, it don't matter you still got 'em. C C F And with leptons and bosons, unless something's amiss, G F C They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists. C C F Quarks can join together in two different ways, G F C Baryons and Mesons, but most instantly decay. C C F If a particle has three quarks, then it's a baryon, G F C If there's one quark and and anti-quark, then it is a meson. C C F These tiny bits of matter are a part of almost everything G F C And there is no unified theory to make it less confusing. C C F But the fact that we've identified that they exist at all G F C Is so god damn remarkable that I just sit in awe. C C F Oh, up, down, strange, charm, top, bottom G F C If you don't know what a quark is, it don't matter you still got 'em. C C F And with leptons and bosons, unless something's amiss, G F C They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists.
