Oh my god! I didn’t know the rest of the song! This is so sad! I’m tear bending I swear!
The fact that the original voice actor for Uncle Iroh wrote this song for himself because he knew he was going to die just adds a new layer of depth to this song. Apparently the original voice actor for Iroh had his final recording by singing this song before he died. He was a soldier in the military and the picture of Iroh’s “son” is a picture of the voice actor in as a younger man. He never got to see the show air.
I find

To those who don’t know, the Voice Actor for Uncle Iroh, who goes by the name Mako in Avatar the Last Airbender, passed away after filming the voice lines. In the episode he sings “Leaves From The Vine” was the last video he was voice acting for. His nephew’s name in the show was Mako, which was based off the voice actor Mako. In the show, Mako passed away in a war, with Uncle Iroh showing respect to Mako’s Grave. Everyone at the time didn’t think much of this, however, truth behold, the song was a message from the voice actor Mako to his supporters, and himself. The “war” within the song and “he died in the war” is referring to the war of Mako and his cancer. Mako was a heavy smoker, so he passed away at the age of 72 due to esophageal cancer, a cancer in the esophagus. When they say “he died in the war”, they were meaning “he lost his war against cancer”. His roles as Aku in Samurai Jack, Splinter in TMNT (2012 [?]), and Uncle Iroh in ATLA and Legend of Korra was taken over by Greg Baldwin. May he rest in peace like a little, brave soldier boy.
