Db
a winter's day
     Gb               Db
In a deep and dark December;

Ebm Ab  Gb Db
I  am alone,
Ebm             Ab      Ebm                Ab
Gazing from my window to the streets below
     Ebm             Gb                Ab
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.

       Db
I am a rock,
        Ab  Db
I am an is-land.

           Db
I've built walls,
  Gb                 Db
a fortress deep and mighty,
     Ebm   Ab   Gb   Db
That none may penetrate.
  Ebm              Ab           Ebm                Ab
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
      Ebm               Gb           Ab
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.

       Db
I am a rock,
        Ab  Db
I am an is-land.

              Db
Don't talk of love,
     Gb                 Db
I've heard the words before;
     Ebm   Ab         Gb   Db
It's sleeping in my memory.
      Ebm                Ab          Ebm                 Ab
And I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
     Ebm            Gb                Ab
If I never loved I never would have cried.

       Db
I am a rock,
        Ab  Db
I am an is-land.

          Db
I have my books

       Gb            Db
And my poetry to protect me;
     Ebm   Ab         Gb   Db
I am shielded in my armor,

Ebm           Ab     Ebm             Ab
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.

  Ebm               Gb              Ab
I touch no one and no one touches me.

       Db
I am a rock,
        Ab  Db
I am an is-land.

      Gb     Fm      Db
And a rock  feels no pain;
       Gb      Fm   Db
And an island never cries.
