Eb
a winter's day
     Ab               Eb
In a deep and dark December;

Fm Bb  Ab Eb
I  am alone,
Fm             Bb      Fm                Bb
Gazing from my window to the streets below
     Fm             Ab                Bb
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.

       Eb
I am a rock,
        Bb  Eb
I am an is-land.

           Eb
I've built walls,
  Ab                 Eb
a fortress deep and mighty,
     Fm   Bb   Ab   Eb
That none may penetrate.
  Fm              Bb           Fm                Bb
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
      Fm               Ab           Bb
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.

       Eb
I am a rock,
        Bb  Eb
I am an is-land.

              Eb
Don't talk of love,
     Ab                 Eb
I've heard the words before;
     Fm   Bb         Ab   Eb
It's sleeping in my memory.
      Fm                Bb          Fm                 Bb
And I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
     Fm            Ab                Bb
If I never loved I never would have cried.

       Eb
I am a rock,
        Bb  Eb
I am an is-land.

          Eb
I have my books

       Ab            Eb
And my poetry to protect me;
     Fm   Bb         Ab   Eb
I am shielded in my armor,

Fm           Bb     Fm             Bb
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.

  Fm               Ab              Bb
I touch no one and no one touches me.

       Eb
I am a rock,
        Bb  Eb
I am an is-land.

      Ab     Gm      Eb
And a rock  feels no pain;
       Ab      Gm   Eb
And an island never cries.
