remember keys
  Gb Db Ebm7
a long, long time ago,
Abm B Ebm Db
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
    Gb Db Ebm7
And I know if I had my chance,
     Abm B
That I could make those people dance
    Ebm B Db
and maybe they'd be happy for a while
    Ebm Abm Ebm Abm
But February made me shiver, with every paper I'd deliver
B Gb Abm B Db
Bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step
  Gb Db Ebm Abm7 Db
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride
Gb Db Ebm
Something touched me deep inside
    B Db7 Gb B Gb
The day the music died

Chorus
   Gb B Gb Db
So bye, bye Miss American Pie
         Gb B Gb Db
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
         Gb B Gb Db
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
        Ebm Ab7
Singin' this will be the day that I die,
Ebm Db7
this will be the day that I die

Verse
Gb Abm
Did you write the book of love
       B Abm Ebm Db
And do you have faith in god above, if the bible tells you so?
Gb Db Ebm
Do you believe in rock and roll
    Abm7 B
Can music save your mortal soul and can
 Ebm Ab7 Db
you teach me how to dance real slow?
       Ebm Db
Well I know that you're in love with him
       Ebm Db
'cuz I saw you dancin' in the gym
    B Gb Ab7
You both kicked off your shoes,
      B Db7
man I dig those rhythm and blues
        Gb Db Ebm
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck with a
Abm B
pink carnation and a pickup truck
    Gb Db Ebm B
But I knew I was out of luck the day
    Db7 Gb B Gb
the music died, I started singin'

Chorus
   Gb B Gb Db
So bye, bye Miss American Pie
         Gb B Gb Db
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
         Gb B Gb Db
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
        Ebm Ab7
Singin' this will be the day that I die,
Ebm Db7
this will be the day that I die

Verse
         Gb Abm
Now for ten years we've been on our own,
      B Abm
and moss grows fat on a rolling stone
Ebm Db
but that's not how it used to be
          Gb Db Ebm
When the jester sang for the king and queen
     Abm7 B
in a coat he borrowed from James Dean in
   Ebm Ab7 Db
a voice that came from you and me
     Ebm Db
And while the king was looking down,
    Ebm Db
the jester stole his thorny crown
     B Gb Ab7 B Db7
The courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned
          Gb Db Ebm
And while Lenin read a book on Marx,
    Abm B
the quartet practiced in the park
    Gb Db Ebm
And we sang dirges in the dark the
B Db7 Gb B Gb
day the music died, we were singin'

Chorus
   Gb B Gb Db
So bye, bye Miss American Pie
         Gb B Gb Db
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
         Gb B Gb Db
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
        Ebm Ab7
Singin' this will be the day that I die,
Ebm Db7
this will be the day that I die

Verse
Gb Abm
Helter skelter in a summer swelter
B Abm
the birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Ebm Db
eight miles high and fallin' fast
      Gb Db Ebm
It landed foul on the grass
      Abm7 B
the players tried for a forward pass,
Ebm Ab7 Db
with the jester on the sidelines in a cast
         Ebm Db
Now at halftime there was sweet perfume,
      Ebm Db
while sergeants played a marching tune
B Gb Ab7 B Db7
We all got up to dance, but we never got the chance
          Gb Db Ebm
'Cuz the players tried to take the field,
    Abm B
the marching band refused to yield
    Gb Db Ebm
Do you recall what was the feel the
B Db7 Gb B Gb
day the music died, we started singin'

Chorus
   Gb B Gb Db
So bye, bye Miss American Pie
         Gb B Gb Db
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
         Gb B Gb Db
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
        Ebm Ab7
Singin' this will be the day that I die,
Ebm Db7
this will be the day that I die

Verse
     Gb Abm
And there we were all in one place,
    B Abm Ebm Db
a generation lost in space, with no time left to start again
            Gb Db Ebm
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
 Abm7 B
Jack Flash sat on a candle
       Ebm Ab7 Db
stick, 'cuz fire is the devil's only friend
     Ebm Db
And as I watched him on the stage,
    Ebm Db
my hands were clenched in fists of rage
   B Gb Ab7 B Db7
No angel born in Hell could bread that Satan's spell
           Gb Db Ebm
And as the flames climbed high into the night to
Abm B
light the sacrificial rite
       Gb Db Ebm B
I saw Satan laughing with delight the day the
Db7 Gb B Gb
music died, he was singin'

Chorus
   Gb B Gb Db
So bye, bye Miss American Pie
         Gb B Gb Db
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
         Gb B Gb Db
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
        Ebm Ab7
Singin' this will be the day that I die,
Ebm Db7
this will be the day that I die

LAST Verse
  Gb Db Ebm
I met a girl who sang the blues
      Abm B
And I asked her for some happy news,
    Ebm Db
but she just smiled and turned away
  Gb Db Ebm
I went down to the sacred store
          Abm B
Where I'd heard the music years before,
        Ebm B
but the man there said the music
         Db
wouldn't play
    Ebm Abm
But in the streets the children screamed,
    Ebm Abm
the lovers cried and the poets dreamed
    B Gb Abm B Db
But not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken
        Gb Db Ebm
And the three men I admire most,
    Abm7 B Db7
the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
Gb Db Ebm
They caught the last train for the coast the
Abm7 Db7 Gb
day the music died,
Db7
And they were singin'

FINAL Chorus
   Gb B Gb Db
So bye, bye Miss American Pie
         Gb B Gb Db
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
         Gb B Gb Db
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
        B Db7 Gb B Gb
Singin' this will be the day that I die.

Hi there! I’m new to ukulele (and music in general), but love this song, and soooo happy it’s not too complicated :)
But is it me, or is D7 as the last chord in the chorus is way too high? I feel like it should be something lower in tone, but don’t know enough yet to suggest what could sound better ^-^

Lillian Nguyen

when pctyd kicks in all you gotta do is go through this once everything gets worse you cry ten times harder but it’s all good ☺️

Transpose to +5 for an easier version to play. :) I find it easier to sing in that key as well. Great version thanks! :)
